Fill the Land with Cinemas

Declarations for Cinema from the Scala Beyond network

DECLARATION #10: Certificate X

Many years ago, David Greenall was asked to provide 100 questions for a Cult Film Quiz at Manchester’s Cornerhouse Cinema, the event, hosted by the outrageous David Hoyle, was a huge success. The winner of the quiz was one Reece Goddard (he even knew what magazine the petrol-station attendant was reading in Raising Arizona – ‘Juggs’ magazine in case you were wondering – no relation to the ceramic vessel commonly used for dispensing liquids).

And so a friendship was forged. At the time, Manchester had a healthy film scene, but as the city became gentrified, spit and sawdust became chrome and cappuccino, independent programming became corporate, and the “scene” became stale.

Seeing what was happening in London with Scala Forever was an inspiration, and Scala Beyond the incentive for us to jump into action. Certificate X is the result. A brand new baby for Manchester.

Scala Beyond will include our first three events: a local living dead classic, a Wicked Dwarf double-bill, and an evening with “the filthiest people alive”.

Certificate X will live beyond Scala Beyond, continuing to share our cinematic pleasures (some of them guilty pleasures) with the beer swilling, pie eating, people of Manchester.
