DECLARATION #12: Exploding Head

Trash or art? Exploitation or innovation? Sacred or sick? Experience 24 truths a second with the heart-thumping, life-enriching, mind-expanding Exploding Head Film Club.

The Exploding Head Film Club was started in early 2010 by Tom Huddleston of Time Out London and Lee Gorton of the Redbricks Organisation to screen mindblowing movies for no money to small crowds of enthusiastic connoisseurs.

Every screening is accompanied by a short film related to the main feature, as well as an informed and enthusiastic introduction. Free popcorn is provided by the management.

Screenings so far have included everything from exploitation movies like ‘Death Race 2000’, ‘A Boy and His Dog’, ‘Race With the Devil’ and ‘Detour’ to classics such as ‘Seconds’, ‘Days of Heaven’, ‘Sweet Smell of Success’, ‘Cutter’s Way’ ‘Cape Fear’ ‘Targets’ and ‘Carnival of Souls’, via music docs like ‘The Devil and Daniel Johnston’ and ‘The Rock-Afire Explosion’ and ace obscurities like ‘The Intruder’ and ‘Somewhere in Europe’.

We’ve also screened shorts by the likes of Maya Deren, Claude Lelouch, Roman Polanski, Ken Russell, Charles Burnett and Jamie Travis, alongside fun Youtube clips and similar nonsense.

The Exploding Head Film Club is currently homeless following the sinking of the USS Jackalope, but we’ll hopefully be back up and running before the end of the year.

As part of Scala Beyond, The Exploding Head Film Club will be taking part in the Scala Beyond Launch Night: FILM JAM, Saturday 18 August | 8.00pm | Free, Roxy Bar & Screen, 128-132 Borough High Street, London.
