Declarations for Cinema from the Scala Beyond network
The Cabinet of Living Cinema believe in foregrounding the semi-improvised liveness that was an integral feature of early cinema through live scores and live foley (or special effects).
Through this, The Cabinet has gone through a process of re-discovery – of silent classics such as Eisenstein’s Strike, but also avant-garde and surreal shorts from the silent period onwards: Jan Svankmajer, Maya Deren, British Transport Film-maker Geoffrey Jones, the Dadaist experiments of Man Ray, to name but a few. The music do not hark from any particular era, but is timeless, without borders. The foley is created from everything, as would have been found in the foley rooms before the digital dawn.
Our latest project brings us closer to the present day, with collaborations with new filmmakers and their amazing contributions, which we present at Rich Mix as part of Whirlygig Cinema’s Making Tracks event.
