Declarations for Cinema from the Scala Beyond network
The Lexi Cinema is… “a little cinema with a big heart”. We’re a social enterprise – our bar and box office are run by local volunteers and 100% of our profits go to a project in South Africa, where a generation is still dealing with the aftermath of South Africa’s legacy of inequality. Our programme is always the result of much long deliberation and hard work; we take a risk on tiny films which have blown our minds, but we aren’t going to apologise for playing Batman, either – with just one screen we still have an amazingly varied bill. Our AV system is all kinds of goodness – we cherish films and screen them the way they were intended to be seen. We also run a lot of schools screenings (especially connecting local pupils with the young people at the project in South Africa) as well as an ongoing outreach project in the local area, showing films for free – we are one of just two cinemas in the whole borough.. The Lexi receives no public funding. We are run on a shoe-string, and with a lot of love (there, I said it).
In the spirit of the Scala we salute the other kindred spirits out there and hope you’ll come to our “Walk on the Wilder Side” season to see what we’re all about!
